After suffering a defeat against Home United in their group C opener, only a victory could ensure progress to the quarter-finals for Court Young Lions.

But it was not to be their night as the visitors took all three points courtesy of a goal each from Mamadou Diallo and Azhar Sairudin.

The Cubs had a disastrous start in their final group game against Hougang United at the Jalan Besar stadium, giving away an unnecessary freekick in the sixth minute of the game allowing the Cheetahs to grap the opener.

Ante Barac sent in a harmless ball to the penalty box and Syazwan Buhari completely misjudged the flight of the cross. Diallo took full advantage of the situation as he headed it into the net to give his team the lead.

Hougang United will kick off their StarHub League Cup 2012 campaign with a visit to Jalan Besar Stadium on Sunday evening to take on an unpredictable Courts Young Lions outfit.

2011 was a milestone year for the northeastern club, not only finishing a record seventh in the league, but also achieving a semifinals finish for the RHB Singapore Cup and finding themselves just a penalty kick away from getting their hands on the League Cup title.

Sherif guns down Hougang United

An early first-half brace from Canadian winger Sherif El-Masri secured all three points for the Courts Young Lions as they inflicted a sixth consecutive loss on Hougang United, in a match marred by some dubious refereeing decisions.

A minute of silence was observed just before kick-off in remembrance of the late Dr. Lau Teng Chuan, one of Singapore’s former top sports administrators who had passed away two days ago.

It was the home side who came roaring out of the traps and they nearly took the lead in the 2nd minute, when Mamadou Diallo blasted a low shot into the side-netting from the right.

However, they went behind just three minutes later, as a half-cleared corner dropped to El-Masri just outside the box and he fired in a first-time half-volley which took a slight deflection on its way to hitting the back of the net.

DLLLLL. That sums up the Cheetahs form for the last six games. Just a point from the last six games, including a 5-1 defeat in the hands of DPMM, the heaviest since Albirex handed a similar scoreline last July.

The Cheetahs have been winless since March 30, after a 3-1 win over Woodlands at Woodlands Stadium. The irony is, the Cheetahs had been a constant threat to the last six oppositions, looking dangerous on every attack. However, Hougang’s main problem has been being clinical in front of the goal. Only three of their players, Jordan Webb, Mamadou Diallo and Stanislav Vidakovic – have scored more than once all season.

The Cheetahs have now been dragged to the bottom half of the table after dwelling in dizzy heights of the S-League table during their visit to Woodlands Wellington on March 30. Since then, a winless streak of six games had seen them edging closer to the bottom, however, with the likes of Tanjong Pagar and Thursday’s opponents Courts Young Lions, picking up form of late with shocking results.

The Hougang faithfuls will be looking forward to a similar scoreline earlier in February, when the Cheetahs grabbed all three points, in what we have seen as the Cheetah’s best performance up to date. Goals from Sobrie Mazelan, Jordan Webb and Stanislav Vidakovic stunned Courts Young Lions at the Jalan Besar Stadium. Ironically, in goal was Ng Jia Fa, who picked up the only clean sheet for Hougang all season, and is the current third choice goalkeeper, following the arrival of Fadhil Salim.

Hougang will be looking to pay more attention on Courts Young Lions winger, Sherif El-Masri. The Canadian youth international had scored twice all season, however, is the team main-playmaker. His wonderful touches and mazy runs down the flank will give Hougang’s defence something to work around. Hougang would also be looking at marking the tall and burly striker, Johnathan Toto, who might be lethal in the air.

Hougang are desperate for a win, especially when they are playing at home with the home crowd behind them. A win and Hougang will at least climb up one spot, however, with Courts Young Lions just a point separating them, Hougang would not let any opportunities for the Cubs to leapfrog them.

LIONSXII will not poach from S.League

By ESPNSTAR.com

Despite the LIONSXII current injury problems, players will not be signed from S.League clubs during the Malaysia Super League transfer window in April.

The Football Association of Singapore, who admitted that players from Courts Yong Lions may however still be poached, made the announcement on Saturday as the LIONSXII reached the quarter-finals of the Malaysia FA Cup thanks to a 2-0 defeat of NS Betaria at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

The side is also currently flying high in the Super League, despite having to deal with a lengthy injury list and the recurring problem of National Service duties having to be prioritised.

Hougang simple lessons on football pushed them to second place

It is a well known recipe for winning football game that to win any football game, is to attack as a unit and convert their chances into goals. And the Cheetahs did just that.

Coming against a new look Courts Young Lions team, and to put behind the misery of last week draw against Tanjong Pagar, Hougang United went to Jalan Besar Stadium as clear underdogs.

Nenad Bacina gave Diallo his first start of the campaign, after passing his Beep Test. Goalkeeper Ridzuan Fatah, who sustained a rib injury during the last game, was replaced by former Jaguar keeper Ng Jia Fa.

The poor start to the Courts Young Lions’ Great Eastern-YEO’S S.League 2012 season continues as they succumbed to their second defeat in a row at Jalan Besar Stadium on Friday evening.

If their 0-1 loss to Woodlands Wellington last week was unlucky, though, the 0-3 defeat to Hougang United this time was a clear washout.

Having points split between Tanjong Pagar last Thursday, Hougang United will be looking for a positive outcome when they swipe paws with S-League side Courts Young Lions this Friday at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

Coach Nenad Bacina had expressed his disappointment for not bagging the opening win against the Jaguars but he did reserve praises for his players afterall, commenting on their composure towards the game.

Courts Young Lions on the other hand are still in need for some fine tuning despite debuting new faces Sherif El-Masri and ex-Hougang midfielder Aqhari Abdullah.

The home side went down 1-0, no thanks to a Woodlands Wellington penalty capitalised by striker Moon Soon Ho. Rams find themselves in third place after the first round.

Diego marks return with equalizer

David Lee

HGFC 1 - 1 CYL

With a clinical flick of his head, the pain of a prolonged, injury-enforced absence was soothed.

Hougang United's Diego Oliveira marked his first start in four months after recovering from a knee injury with a 70th-minute header.

The closing of the League Cup tournamanet opens to yet another chapter of the S-League and I'm sure Hougang United with be itching for somesort of payback after they lost out to Albirex Niigata in the penalty shoot out.

It was unfortunate though to miss the penalty but Hougang United have really done quite abit for themselves this season and there will always be next year to grab some silverware. :)

Back to business, Tuesday at Jalan Besar will see Courts Young Lions return to the S-League after almost 2 and a half weeks of hiatus from the league due to national duties.

Courting the Young Lions will be a no rosy affair, for the visitors have since recorded their first win against Geylang United at the Jalan Besar Stadium in front of Pele and Cantona, impressing a crowd of almost 3,000 spectators.

As for Hougang United, having succumbed to 3 straight defeats, Aide and his boys will be looking forward to a change of fate and putting the Young Lions to the test.

Supporters like myself want to see that same swift counter attacking displayed against Etoile FC at the Queenstown stadium last Monday.
