Singapore U-23 0

It was a friendly game against the Singapore Under 19 team, who is representing the Lions City in the upcoming NEX Cup tournament, facing the world famous academies of Manchester United, Liverpool and Sporting Clube de Portugal.

Headed by Cheetah's new head coach, Alex Weaver, Hougang faced a coach who was familiar by the Cheetahs hierachy, former Hougang head coach, Aide Iskandar.

Aide, who first joined Hougang's predecessor Sengkang Punggol as player in 2007, then turned coach in 2009, following the dismissal of Jorg Steinbrunner. He had a memorable season in 2011, where he led Hougang to their best placed finish in the S-League so far, and led the Cheetahs to the League Cup final and fourth place in the Singapore Cup.

Tampines Rovers were given a stern reminder of how badly defeat could sting them when they visited Hougang Stadium for a friendly outing against Hougang United on Thursday evening.

If the outcome of the match was anything to go by, the Stags will do well to be wary when they step out on the Jalan Besar Stadium pitch to take on SAFFC in the penultimate league game of their season in a week’s time.

Falling on the wrong end of a 5-1 mauling might have mattered little in itself, given that there were no points or trophies at stake, but there were worrying signs in the manner of the defeat.

Perhaps Tampines wanted to conserve their energy for the upcoming challenges – they meet the Warriors as well in the RHB Singapore Cup final – or perhaps the absence of Aleksandar Duric, Jufri Taha and Fahrudin Mustafic due to national team commitments weakened them somewhat.

Tale of two halves for Hougang in friendly against Johor FA

A Muriel Orlando brace was enough for Malaysian Premier League (MPL) side Johor FA to see off the challenge of visitors Hougang United from the S.League as they emerged 2-0 winners in a international club friendly played on Tuesday night.

It was a tale of two halves as Hougang clearly dominated the first but it was Johor FA who took the stranglehold of the game in the second and eventually went on to win the game.

Ten minutes into the game, a Hougang counter saw the ball fall at Diallo’s feet but the forward could only fire a tame shot from 25 yards out straight into the keeper’s arms. Three minutes later, Diallo had an even better opportunity to open the scoring but was denied by some good goalkeeping after Jordan Webb had done well to play him through.
