Hougang United made it three wins in a row in the Great Eastern-YEO's S.League after cruising to a 3-0 triumph over Balestier Khalsa on Tuesday evening.

The Cheetahs got off a terrific start when Basit Hamid opened the scoring in the first minute, before he doubled their advantage 15 minutes later when found the back of the net again with a glancing header.

Balestier came back strongly after the break and created a number of good chances, but the tie was effectively settled in the 59th minute when Ante Barac curled home a terrific freekick.

Gunning for a third win on their trot, Hougang United will travel the short distance to nearby Toa Payoh to face off with fellow cats Balestier Khalsa who went down to a surprising 0-1 defeat at Gombak United last week.

Seemingly revitalised after the mid-season break, the Cheetahs have notched consecutive victories over Tanjong Pagar and Geylang but they have had to dig deep in both matches.

Still lacking fluency and verve in their attacking play, Hougang are finding it difficult to put the ball in the back of the net, especially with main striker Mamadou Diallo firing blanks while Sobrie Mazelan and Basit Hamid have not been too prolific either.

Bacina calls for Webb protection

By ESPNSTAR.com

In the wake of Thursday's 1-0 Great defeat to Balestier Khalsa, Hougang United coach Nenad Bacina believes Jordan Webb deserves more protection from the referees.

A 75th-minute solo goal from Zulkiffli Hassim in the 75th minute was enough to secure a result which saw Balestier move second in the Great Eastern-YEO's S.League, but the game was marred by several flashpoints.

Canadian forward Webb was on the receiving end of several hard challenges from the Tigers, and Bacina believes skillful players like him deserve more protection from the men in the middle.

"I think Jordan Webb is a player who should be more protected," Bacina said after the game.

"People come for the matches to see these players who can give us some skill on the field.

"Definitely, these players should be more protected."

Zulkiffli Hassim 75'

In a game where an astonishing eleven yellow cards were issued, Balestier Khalsa edged out Hougang United 1-0 in a scrappy encounter. Zulkiffli Hassim’s superb strike gave the Tigers all three points, thereby ending the Cheetahs’ unbeaten start to the season, while maintaining their own undefeated streak.

The first of many bookings came in the 6th minute, when Hougang’s Jordan Webb was carded for a dive in the penalty area. Things then nearly came to a boil four minutes later, as the Canadian winger appeared to retaliate after being brought down with a clumsy challenge. Tempers frayed as players from both sides confronted each other, but thankfully, the situation did not get out of control in the end.

Another big cat fight looms as the Cheetahs of Hougang United and Balestier Khalsa Tigers face-off this Thursday at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

Last month Balestier Khalsa delivered a shocker when they beat S-League Champions Tampines Rovers to a 1-0 scoreline courtesy of a Ruhaizad Ismail effort in the final moments.

And more recently, Balestier drew 1-1 with Gombak United at the Toa Payoh Stadium even though Bulls commanded most of the possession; but in the end, Gombak's poor finishing rue their chances. Credit to Balastier's captain Paul Cunningham for marshaling the Tigers tight defences and salvaging point each for the mid-dwellers; placing Gombak in 8th and Balestier slightly ahead in 5th.

Previous meetings between Hougang and Balestier yield 2 wins and a draw for the Cheetahs. Last season, Hougang only managed to draw 2-2 at home; that was followed by a 4-2 win over the Tigers at the Toa Payoh Stadium. And finally, former Hougang United midfielder Nor Ali put one of the two goals past the Balestier in the later part of the S-league campaign. Hougang United prevailed 2-0 in that match.

Fast forward to 2012, Hougang United's fortune of late continues to favour them but coach Nenad Bacina was quick to downplay Hougang's success at this initial stage.

Hougang edge Balestier 1-0 in controversial friendly

Reported by: Teng Kiat

A solitary goal from Mamadou Diallo was enough for Hougang United to beat Balestier Khalsa in a pre-season friendly at the Toa Payoh Stadium, amidst the drama of two second-half dismissals.

Notable Balestier absentees were Goran Subara and Paul Cunningham, while new signing Stanko Vidakovic was missing for Hougang. Interestingly enough, former Gombak striker Chang Jo Yoon, thought to have signed for Home United, turned out for Balestier.

Backed by a handful of the Hougang Hools, the Cheetahs dominated the first half. With ten minutes played, captain Lau Meng Meng surged forward from defence and sent Diallo clear. However, the striker was foiled by a fine stop from Joey Sim.

Cheetahs win battle of big cats

HGFC 2 - 0 BKFC

Hougang's victory last night means eight straight loss for Balestier Tigers.

Balestier Khalsa's wretched run of form continue last night, going down 2-0 to Hougang United.

The Tigers have not won since beating Tanjong Pagar by the same score line in July, and last night's defeat at the Hougang Stadium made it eight losses in a row.

"It just seems like one of those seasons, nothing's going our way," lamented Balestier captain Paul Cunningham.

"We haven't scored since the SAFFC game (Sept 14). That's a problem"

Match Preview: Hougang vs Balestier

Hougang United host Balestier Khalsa this Monday evening at Hougang stadium which will see the North East club try to collect all 3 points from this encounter.

Hougang United's dramatic comeback last Friday against Geylang United made history for itself for beating all teams in all competition this season. A nice record to have for a club with the smallest budget in the S-League.

The battle for Middle-Earth continues...Both Balestier and Hougang reunite at the Toa Payoh stadium after both sides succumbed to 2-0 losses in their latest fixtures.

Balestier's lost to Gombak United means the Bulls leap frog the Cheetahs (7th) to 6th in the S-league and Geylang's win (8th) in Hougang see them surge infront of the Tigers who are currently in the 9th position.

Hougang United     vs     Balestier Khalsa

I don't think it will be this gentle when Tuesday arrives

Looking back, Hougang United need to re-cap and capitalise on what was a fine first half display of sheer genius at the Bedok clash.

Going forward, the defenses need to hold and cracks need to be ironed out, which have been plaguing the backline this season. So don't give up lads! Chins up and train hard!

Kudos to Mr. One Hundred Noor Ali and Fazli Jaffar for their much spirited attacks along the Geylang United flanks. The game could have been a different scoreline if ladyluck had spent more time at stadiums than in casinos.
