RHB Singapore Cup: Stunning Okkthar comeback falls short

OUFC 3 - 1 HGFC
AGG: OUFC 3 - 4 HGFC

What looked like the one tie that was all but over by the first leg turned out to be a race to the finish in the second, as Okkthar United gave Hougang United a fight that no one expected.

Down 0-3 on aggregate after their devastating loss earlier in the week, the Burmese side gave an all-out performance in front of a vociferous crowd of loyal Burmese supporters who had filled out nearly the entirety of their side of the allocated seats at Jalan Besar Stadium on Friday night.

An electrically charged atmosphere permeated the Hougang Stadium stands on Tuesday evening for the first leg of the RHB Singapore Cup quarterfinals tie between Hougang United and Myanmar’s Okkthar United.

With the Myanmarese support numbering in the hundreds in the main stand and providing waves upon waves of reverberating cheers for their countrymen, Okkthar showed plenty of spirit on the field as well as they battled the Cheetahs tooth and nail.

Ultimately, though, they still could not ride on the wave of raucous euphoria, succumbing to a debilitating 0-3 loss.

Match Preview: Tampines vs Hougang

Tampines Rovers     vs     Hougang United

This match brings about memories of the infamous 2-0 win over the Stags in May but this coming Wednesday will be a different story altogether as history shows that when Hougang United played away at Tampines early in the season, they were trounced 5-2.

Just last week the Stags were beaten 2-0 by Geylang United whose back line stood against the onslaught of Duric and Latiff and the Eagles prevailed. However, Tampines Rovers got back on track to winning ways with their 1-0 win against Balestier Khalsa over the weekend.

We are HOUGANG HOOLs and we BELIEVE!

The lack of crowd and the indifferent opinions of the Foreign Talent Scheme in the S-League have all been discussed with great enthusiasm and great pain amongst the football fraternity in Singapore.

But amidst these clouds of ‘gloom & doom', a group of Singaporeans have been up and about in supporting their neighborhood club Hougang United FC.

Courts Young Lions       vs      Hougang United

The closing of the League Cup tournamanet opens to yet another chapter of the S-League and I'm sure Hougang United with be itching for somesort of payback after they lost out to Albirex Niigata in the penalty shoot out.

It was unfortunate though to miss the penalty but Hougang United have really done quite abit for themselves this season and there will always be next year to grab some silverware. :)

Back to business, Tuesday at Jalan Besar will see Courts Young Lions return to the S-League after almost 2 and a half weeks of hiatus from the league due to national duties.
