Cheers all around at Awards Night

By Kenneth Tan

Fans, officials and players of the S.League fraternity came together for a time of joy and celebration at the Great Eastern-YEO’S S.League Awards Night 2012, which was held at ITE College East on Sunday evening.

And it was an occasion that saw accolades go out all around, as players, media and even sponsors walked away satisfied with what they had enjoyed at the end of the event, which ran smoothly for a little over two hours.

Unlike the case in previous years, the annual marquee event to celebrate the finest achievements of the fraternity was held in a school-setting for the first time – with the ceremony held in the spacious ITE College East auditorium and most ably hosted by ESPN presenter Colette Wong.

And it was a mixture of experienced faces and new men earning honours for the 13 awards that were presented for the night.

Synergy, ferventness, cause, samagat ...

Whatever you want to call it, can only happen when ordinary Singaporeans converge towards creating something extraordinary - to bridge the gap between the disenchanted fans and the league authorities.

We decided long ago that complaining about it was as good as not doing anything productive. Writing letters and suggestions to the press is simply a waste of time and not our forte.

We would rather get ourselves to the stadium, lend our visual & vocal support than to sit behind a computer screen conjuring your brilliant remedy for S-league; and then waiting for your article to be published - stroking your ego while you admire your own text. Sorry hor, we were not formed to be keyboard warriors.

Neither were we formed to win some silly "Fan Club" of the year - that's the last thing on our minds - Seriously, what can you do with this award? Decorate our home? Stroke our egos again? Yawn...

Hougang Hools was formed to galvanized support for S-League and for Hougang United. To show Singaporeans and the football fraternity that organic fan support is vital to our league's survival and that our chants and songs unequivocally lifts the spirit of our club.

And Hougang Hools will continue to do so in our own fashion.

Support is the lifeblood of football

By Sazali Abdul Aziz and David Lee
The New Paper

SINGAPORE - Halfway around the globe, in the more modest environment of the S-League, those words (left) by Shankly and Platini still ring true.

As Tampines prepare to take on Harimau Muda in their most important match of the season tomorrow, their fans are also prepping themselves for the huge clash.

Win, and the Stags will retain their league title. Lose or draw, and it will all depend on what DPMM do in Brunei against Balestier Khalsa.

Speaking to The New Paper yesterday, Tampines die-hard fan Haikel Mohd, a 26-year-old student, said: "I'll definitely be there at Jalan Besar for Friday's game.

"I have class that day, but I've already decided I'm going to skip it. It's not every day your team are playing in a title-decider."

Find yourself a gem of a game

By AsiaOne
Photo: TNP
SINGAPORE - There's nothing quite like watching a football game live at the stadium.

But, while fans have flocked to the Jalan Besar Stadium to watch the LionsXII strut their stuff in the Malaysian Super League, our own S-League continues to struggle with the numbers.

If you were one of the 447 fans watching last Friday's clash between Harimau Muda and Hougang United, however, you'd not be bothered with the statistics.

The match had everything you could ask for as a neutral.

There were end-to-end goalmouth action and plenty of flying - committed, not dirty - challenges on the field.

Both coaches - the Malaysian side's Ong Kim Swee and Hougang's Nenad Bacina - were vocal and animated on the touchline, protesting and appealing against decisions that didn't go their way.

The best part was that at the final whistle, there was no hint of animosity whatsoever.

Hougang hears a Hool (Part 1)

By JustSports
Photo: Hougang Hools
JustSports recently caught up with Mervin Tan, one of the founding members Hougang Hools, Hougang United´s supporters club. In this interesting two part interview, Mervin takes us through the origins of the loudest and proudest supporters in Singapore and what it is to be a “Hool”.

1) When was Hougang HOOLs formed? And why?

The Hougang United Supporters’ Club, affectionately known as the Hougang HOOLs (Hougang Only One Love!), was officially established on the 1st January 2011.

However, the movement can be traced to 18th July 2010, when a group of 5 Manchester United fans (which included me), from the official Manchester United supporters’ club of Singapore (United For United), visited Hougang stadium to lend support to our friend Aide Iskandar, who was then the coach of Sengkang Punggol Football Club. Aide is also the head of the Manchester United Soccer School in Singapore.

Sengkang-Punggol (SPFC) was rooted at the bottom of the S.League table, and by that night they were suffering a winless streak of 13 games (I think) and facing a rough Beijing Guo’an side that evening. The five of us, having been steeped in the traditions of English terrace chants at Man United matchday gatherings, decided to do our thing at that match for Aide’s boys, knowing they had no official fan club and that we were supporting the team not just for being a title-contender.

As can be seen from the highlights of that match (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWQ_n8k8G4c), the Dolphins gave away a penalty but for Fadhil Salim to save, and at the 86th minute Diallo scored the winning header to send the entire bench (and the 5 of us) into delirium! Just 5 of us, but the effect that it conjured!

Subsequently, we decided to do the same for SPFC at the very next match, against Balestier Khalsa. 38th minute, one man sent off, but with 10 men and about 10 of us cheering the Dolphins on, the 10 men put on an incredible fight to score another 1-0 win and notched their rare 2-in-a-row win that season.

Since then, there was no turning back, as the fans from U4U, along with others who slowly joined us one by one, helped vocally inspire the lads for the rest of that 2010 season. The club finished that season with one of their best league points tally in their history. It was such a thrill knowing that the positive vibes we bring for our team made such a huge difference for the team.

2) Is HOOLs fanbase concentrated only to those living in and around Hougang?

As much as we would love Hougang residents – including residents of surrounding towns around Hougang like obviously Sengkang and Punggol, Serangoon, even eastern Ang Mo Kio (hence the term “United”!) – to embrace Hougang United as their own, the Hougang HOOLs are mainly made up of fans who embrace the culture of intense unwavering support for our Hougang United. I personally live in Clementi (I’m a “westerner” all my life!), and we have HOOLs who live in Jurong, Woodlands, Toa Payoh, even Tampines etc, and of course, Hougang and Sengkang.

So I’d say, the Hougang HOOLs exist for two reasons: for Hougang people, and for the HOOLS! PRIDE OF THE NORTHEAST!

3) How are relations between Hougang HOOLs and Hougang United’s management?

The management is very supportive of our endeavours as I believe they know our heart for inculcating the culture of unconditional allegiance and (pretty much ultras-like!) vocal support for our own Hougang United. That is the main reason why we had decided to jump aboard, admittedly reluctantly, as the official supporters’ club. (Yes, we are ultra fans at heart!)

They have provided moral and financial support for most of the ideas that we had suggested and implemented, which is mostly merchandising and season ticketing. Of course, as purely volunteers doing all these as labour of love, they have not imposed any demands on us at all, and for that, we are very grateful.

4) Hougang HOOLs’ style of standing and singing throughout the game is a first of its kind in the S-League, where do you draw your inspiration from?

As mentioned, we first started out infusing our brand of English football terrace support, then slowly adapted local chants into our repertoire. Also, we are inspired by the numerous YouTube videos of ultras in Europe in their support for their football team: non-stop singing and chants, flags and banners, flares (here, we can only use sparklers sparingly!), standing and jumping. And yes, I’m one who personally cannot understand how anybody can sit down and yet still feel passionate about the live football game!

5) How is the membership application for this season? Has it seen an improvement compared to last year?

At the moment, we have achieved the same number of season pass application (which is basically how we track membership) as last season, about 50. To be honest, I was quite disappointed with the small number of signups, but given the current general apathy towards our S.League from the media and average Singaporeans, we have a long hard road to market and probably educate our next generation of young fans to grow our culture of support for our Hougang United. Especially when we are doing these voluntarily outside of our work and family time. As I’ve said, a labour of love.

Sign-ups are still ongoing throughout the season though, so let’s hope there’ll be more people coming by our coming games, starting this Friday at Jalan Besar stadium. (SOURCE)

Part 2 of our interview with Mervin Tan, one of the founders of the Hougang United supporters club, the Hougang “Hools”

What’s your hope for Hougang United this season?

In short:
- For our Hougang boys to play their darndest best, to enter into battle on the pitch with full sweat,
blood and tears (hopefully not shedding any of the latter two!). No surrender!

- For our Hougang heroes to finish the season with pride in their hearts, having played a truly
meaningful season and a love for the Hougang cause. For each and every single one of the lads – from
management to first team to prime league to COE squad to fans – to have bonded together in a fiercely
loyal semangat. For the players to play for each other, train in oneness, even go out together, for the
Hougang cause.

- We like all fans may find winning any form of silverware – be it the league title or cup, or any awards -
be celebration-worthy, but we see winning silverware as merely a big bonus. For we stand by our credo:

“SILVERWARE, WE DON’T CARE! WE FOLLOW HOUGANG EVERYWHERE!

For sponsors to recognize the appeal of Hougang United and come aboard the Hougang Revolution,
the semangat of the team and the inevitable growth of the Hougang HOOLs. I don’t want financial lack
to be an obstacle against:

- The long-term growth goal of Hougang United to be a regional football powerhouse. Yes, I envision
my Hougang someday winning our very first S.League title (hopefully within half a decade’s time),
eventually taking on the best of the Asian Champions League and bringing honour to the name of
Hougang.

Finally, for Hougang United to always have quality fans, failthful fans who will support Hougang United
through the best and darkest times, who will learn the value of “If you are not around during our
struggle, do not be present for our success”.

Lastly, any word for your management, players, coach or fans from the other clubs?

Yup!

For management: we support all your endeavours to advance the cause of Hougang United Football
Club for our on-pitch success and glory. Always remember, the circle of trust and partnership between
management, coach, players, sponsors and fans must always fight for each other and for that one cause.
We want Hougang United win the S.League some day!!!

To our coach Nenad Bacina: IN NENAD WE TRUST!

Our Hougang heroes: Though we are privileged to be counted as your friends, we will always look up to
you as you do battle in our Hougang colours. NO SURRENDER!!

Fans of other clubs: We Hougang HOOLs full-heartedly support the endeavours of the other fan clubs,
especially the unofficial ones who are of one heart in unwavering support for your respective club, to
grow the fan movement and develop a long-term football fan culture amongst Singaporeans. We want
to see our S.League become once again a famed powerhouse league that feeds our national team for
international glory! Yes, we may be rival fans for 90 minutes, but outside of it, S.League fans at large
know we are united in supporting our Singapore national team! (SOURCE)

Friendly – SAFFC vs Hougang United

(14/01/12, 7pm, Jalan Besar Stadium)
by JustSports | Posted on Saturday, January 14th, 2012
Hougang United, the most supported S-League (DPMM excused) club this coming season thanks to the Hougang Hools, will get the perfect opportunity to show just what a supporters group sounds like, as they have the chance to sing, shout and support Hougang vs SAFFC at Jalan Besar this evening. Can they out voice the LionsXII crowd? Maybe not tonight, but once the S-League season kicks off quite probably.

Fresh off a 4-0 victory over NFL1 team SSC at the Padang last Sunday, with goals scored by Syaqir, Diallo, Hafeez and Shameer. One would expect a much sterner test from SAFFC than the NFL1 and possibly less rotations as coach Bacina looks to narrow down on the 22 players who saw minutes against SSC.

Die-hard supporters rally to promote the S-League

Fans fear blanket coverage of LionsXII in the M-League will be detrimental to local football scene
by Philip Goh Haw Hann

SINGAPORE - They drew curious stares from the sparse Orchard Road crowd. Dressed in their football jerseys, carrying scarves and flags, members of local fan group Lions All The Way (LATW) broke the quiet of a benign afternoon with their lusty singing, and catchy chants.

With workmen around them dismantling tentage for the New Year's Eve celebrations, around 35 LATW members assembled outside Ngee Ann City to proclaim the first day of 2012 as "Don't Forget Your S-League Day" (picture).

A tale of 2 Leagues

Long long ago, the Football Governing Body (FGB) had its own football league but through the years, it began to slowly decline. Its administration was plagued by jaded officials who had lost the stomach to develop the sport.

In another country, a Rival Football Body (RFB) had started a league of their own and threatened the survival of FGB. The rival group had plans to attract all football fans from FGB over to its side.

The President of FGB called for emergency meeting and two groups of football fans were commissioned the task of increasing the match attendance at their respective football clubs.

They were named Group 1 and 2, and were given pretty much any legitimate means to accomplish their goal and to reignite the football passion amongst their fellow countrymen.

We believe because we are Hougang HOOLs!

What I have learned so far since becoming a supporter of this club is that even though a lot of obstacles have been placed in front of supporters, obstacles placed in front of the football team, obstacles placed in front of the club, we did not give up and made this club a growing family.

The reason is simple in that we as football fans believed in ourselves. We believed we could take Hougang United FC to the next level. We did not rely on others to spoon feed or push us to do the things we did for this club, but made it happen simply as football fans.

A football team can win all the time but their club isn’t great because people are there only to watch a winning team. There is an absense of emotional connection between the fans and the club.

Being part of Hougang United FC means that you are more than just a club supporter, you are actually a stake holder of this property – you are a Singaporean representing club and country and each time you raise your hands to sing and chant, you hold a piece of Hougang United FC next to your heart. And this pride and loyalty cannot be bought or sold. It is imbued into your soul.

You are the example to all Singaporeans and S-League clubs that football fans are the cornerstone of the football industry. Only you can make a football club great. No one else. So keep the Hougang United football tradition alive! Cheers!

Hougang United FC to boost fan base

Hougang United FC will be vying to increase it's club membership as well as to boost crowd attendance for the coming S-League season 2012.

Although relatively small in terms of financial standings, the club's image & branding overhaul and an uncanny player-fan relationship have brought about a completely fresh look to the North-Easterners.

On the pitch, the Cheetahs have been transformed from the perennial minnows of yesteryears to an invigorated attacking unit and have secured no less than 15 wins and accumulating 43 points - 48 if you consider the docked points; compared to the 2010 season in which they managed only 7 wins and 27 points. She has sinced climbed to the highest 7th position in her S-League footballing history.

This year, the club has also finished runners-up in the Singapore League Cup and also came in 4th in the RHB Singapore Cup. It has been an encouraging season so far.

Off the pitch, an injection of fan involvement a.k.a 'HOOLs' has also emerged in the form of chanting and singing in the stands. The management at helm are very aware of this and intend to draw more like-minded fervent fans to supplement this culture.

How the club goes about in it's advertising campaign, I have no idea yet, but I do know that the above ingredients make for an even more exciting 2012 for Hougang United. :)

Stay tuned for more updates...

We are HOUGANG HOOLs and we BELIEVE!

The lack of crowd and the indifferent opinions of the Foreign Talent Scheme in the S-League have all been discussed with great enthusiasm and great pain amongst the football fraternity in Singapore.

But amidst these clouds of ‘gloom & doom', a group of Singaporeans have been up and about in supporting their neighborhood club Hougang United FC.
