A brace from Yasuhiro Yamakoshi failed to prevent Hougang United from grabbing a famous victory over ten-men Albirex Niigata (S) to leave their title hopes hanging by a thread.

Second-placed Albirex Niigata (S) lost more ground in the S.League title race as they crashed to a 3-2 defeat at home to Hougang United, despite Yasuhiro Yamakoshi's double.

Following last week's 1-0 loss to Balestier Khalsa, the hosts could not afford to falter here, but goals from Mamadou Diallo, Sobrie Mazelan and Jordan Webb secured victory for Hougang and deal a potentially fatal blow to Albirex's title hopes.

Match Preview: Albirex Niigata (S) vs Hougang United

After Tampines’ 3-0 victory over the Courts Young Lions last night, Albirex Niigata (S) are now in intense pressure to win tonight’s game against Hougang United to keep up the pace with the Stags.

The White Swans are now eight points away from the top with four games to go and if they are to stand any chance of wrestling the title away from Tampines, this is a must-win game for them especially with an upcoming potential title decider next Wednesday.

The Albirex of 2012 while not as swashbuckling as the one last year, have still managed to grind out results and that is the reason why they are currently sitting in second place in the table. One of which will be their 2-1 win over tonight’s opponents early this season at the Hougang Stadium.

A late goal from Norihiro Kawakami in the dying seconds disappointed the Hougang faithfuls, who have turn up In great numbers, prior to the match.

In a fixture which had shown plenty of drama last season, the Cheetahs and the White Swans locked their horns again at Hougang Stadium on Friday.

Hougang had students and teachers from Cedar Primary School in attendence that filled up the grandstand, alongside the boisterous Hougang Hools, who were more than happy to have the children cheering along with them.

Hougang United suffered heartbreak against Albirex Niigata when the Japanese side scored a winner in the last minute of injury time, right after they had equalized in the first minute of injury time.

Both sides came into the game on the sixth and seventh spot in the table with the Cheetahs leading the White Swans by a point. That said, it did not prevent Hougang from adopting a soak-and-strike strategy.

And then there were two.

The final stretch of a frenetic title chase for the 2011 S.League championship will be effectively between Home United and Tampines Rovers as dark horses Albirex Niigata (Singapore) fell further off the pace after being held to a 1-1 draw at Hougang Stadium on Monday evening.

Following Friday’s injury-time heartache against Gombak United, a second successive stalemate has left their hopes of a first-ever S.League title hanging by the thinnest of threads.

Friday night’s RHB Singapore Cup semifinals second-leg match between Hougang United and Albirex Niigata (Singapore) was a game that had everything.

It was a five-goal thriller, finally settled 117 minutes into a spine-tingling encounter that will be talked about for a long time to come, not only by those present in the stands and the players, but by those watching at home on television who got superb value for money.

Semi Finals (2nd Leg)

They now know who their opponents will be in this year’s RHB Singapore Cup final, following the intense game in the other semifinal at Queenstown Stadium on Thursday night that saw Home United come out on top by the slimmest of margins.

So when Hougang United and Albirex Niigata (Singapore) play the second leg of their tie at Hougang Stadium on Friday evening, they will be fighting for the privilege of facing four-time winners Home, a prospect which should make both teams even keener to progress to that November showdown at Jalan Besar.

Hougang United defied the odds to storm back from two goals down against Albirex Niigata (Singapore), drawing 2-2 at Jurong East Stadium on Tuesday evening to bring well-deserved parity back to Hougang Stadium for the second leg of the RHB Singapore Cup 2011 semifinals tie.

Many were expecting the League Cup champions to sweep Hougang aside at Jurong East, and it certainly looked like the script would be followed in the opening minutes.

Albirex Niigata (Singapore) would certainly have fond memories of their last meeting with Hougang United.

The last time the two teams met, the White Swans secured their first piece of silverware in their eight-year history in Singapore, beating the Cheetahs in the League Cup 2011 final in July through a penalty shootout.

League Cup: Triumphant Albirex celebrate rite of passage

Tam Cheong Yan

Albirex Niigata (Singapore) were crowned champions of the League Cup 2011 tournament after beating Hougang United in the grand final at Jalan Besar Stadium on Saturday evening.

Yoshito Matsushita’s save to deny Jordan Webb in the final regulation attempt of the penalty shootout was enough to clinch the Japanese side victory by a 5-4 margin, after 120 minutes of football had left both sides exactly where they had started.

Despite the lack of goals, Albirex impressed on the occasion with a team display that was markedly different from what they had often shown this season, reflecting a newfound maturity against a firmly aggressive Hougang outfit.
