S-League stars offer soccer tips to kids

By AsiaOne

Mislav Karoglan. Hassan Sunny. Jordan Webb.

They are just three of the 10 S-League stars who will be dispensing soccer tips to 150 children aged nine to 11 years old this Sunday at the RHB Soccer Clinic with S-League Stars.

This workshop, the first to be conducted by the S-League stars, will be held at the Jalan Besar Stadium located at Tyrwhitt Road.

There, the players will give tips ranging from dribbling to shooting.

The event is organised by the community centres (CCs) of the People’s Association (PA), and is one of five workshops conducted by sports celebrities.

Previous workshops were conducted by Vincent Ng, Sheik Alau’ddin, Fandi Ahmad and Ashley Liew.

Said Football Association of Singapore (FAS) president, Mr Zainudin Nordin: "It remains a key objective for FAS to reach out to the community through football, and to promote football at the 2 2 grassroots level.

"Therefore it is a real pleasure to be able to work with People’s Association to bring children participants to this meaningful event, and we hope they will have an afternoon to remember."

The Sports Celebrities series is part of the Keep Fit & Wellness campaign from July to September 2012, which aims to bond the community through the various courses and workshops. (SOURCE)

Bacina calls for Webb protection

By ESPNSTAR.com

In the wake of Thursday's 1-0 Great defeat to Balestier Khalsa, Hougang United coach Nenad Bacina believes Jordan Webb deserves more protection from the referees.

A 75th-minute solo goal from Zulkiffli Hassim in the 75th minute was enough to secure a result which saw Balestier move second in the Great Eastern-YEO's S.League, but the game was marred by several flashpoints.

Canadian forward Webb was on the receiving end of several hard challenges from the Tigers, and Bacina believes skillful players like him deserve more protection from the men in the middle.

"I think Jordan Webb is a player who should be more protected," Bacina said after the game.

"People come for the matches to see these players who can give us some skill on the field.

"Definitely, these players should be more protected."

Hougang United players named S-League team of the week

Goal.com team picks the best XI in Round 3 of S.League matches

Left forward - Jordan Webb
The majestic Jordan Webb made it 3 goals in 3 games as he helped Hougang preserve their unbeaten run this season. He opened the scoring with an unstoppable right-footed shot from outside the area and continued to threaten Geylang's defence throughout the whole match. If the Canadian winger is able to maintian his goal scoring form, he might be the man who can bring Hougang a trophy this season.

Striker - Ignatius Ang
Coming on as a subsitute in the match, Ignatius Ang did exactly what he was told by Hougang coach Nenad Bacina and scored the second goal which successfully wrapped up the game for the Cheetahs. His well-timed header meeting team-mate Fazli Jaffar's cross showed his alertness and skills. Also, Hougang's attack became livelier and sharper after the forward came on. The Singapore youth international is sure to be a player to look out for if he can maintain his form.

Hougang United players named S-League team of the week

The Goal.com team picks the best XI from Round 2 of S.League matches

Goalkeeper - Ng Jia Fa
Former National Football Academy trainee Ng Jia Fa was Hougang's second-choice goalkeeper up till his impressive performance in their last league fixture against the Young Lions. Having been unexpectedly fielded for his first full ninety minutes of the season, Ng Jia Fa made several brilliant saves, managing to maintain a clean sheet against his young opponents. If Ng Jia Fa was to maintain his current form through the season, Hougang United will definitely be a tough nut to crack.

Jordan Webb - Hougang's Record Scorer

By TNP

TWO YEARS ago, he came to Singapore to visit a cousin. Today, Jordan Webb is Hougang United’s record scorer in a single season. And he didn’t even know it.

“Me?” asked the puzzled-looking 23-year-old forward from Canada. “No, I didn’t know that.” What was supposed to be a holiday in Singapore turned into the start of his S-League career. Through cousin Anthony Bahadur, who was then playing for Sengkang-Punggol (Hougang’s former name), Webb asked to train with the team. Coach Aide Iskandar agreed, and immediately noticed the potential.

Aide recalled: “I saw something in him that made me think he could be moulded into a good player.” Webb didn’t take too long to convince the coach that he was ready for action.

After training with the team for three months,it took just two games for the Canadian to secure his first professional contract.

Said Webb: “I was surprised but, at the same time, I was confident I would get it.

“I wanted it badly.” The hunger showed. Scoring 16 goals in all competitions this season – his second for Hougang – he has found the net more times than any other Cheetah in one campaign. Yet, Aide is quick to point out that Webb is capable of improving on his tally.

He said of Webb: “I know what he can do. I know he can deliver if he remains focused and he is more confident in his ability.”

Webb had to endure a difficult first season though. He scored just four goals as the team finished second from bottom.

“My first season was bad. We didn’t have the quality players like we have this year and it was really difficult,” said Webb, who prior to this, had played only amateur football back home.

“It was my first season as a professional.” By “quality players”, he was referring to players such as Mohd Noor Ali.

“It’s Noor Ali,” he said.

NICE GUY

“At first, I didn’t really see eye-to-eye with him. Then I realised he’s a really nice guy.

“He plays in my position as well. He knows a lot. Whenever I do the wrong thing, he’ll teach me. He shows me the right way.

“He has really helped me.” As far as his mentor is concerned, Webb’s progress is obvious.

“Jordan has improved a lot,” said Noor Ali. “He used to be more of an individual player. Now he is improving by working together with his teammates. That is one reason he is
scoring a lot of goals.”

The 36-year-old added: “He has started to listen more now, instead of going against us.”

One only has to witness the banter between the pair to see the camaraderie within the camp.

As the veteran midfielder revealed: “He’s not a joker, he’s the one who always gets bullied.

“The only bad thing about him is his ambition to be the next Neymar (the Brazilian striker). That’s why he has that skunk hairstyle.”

Webb, however, will probably deny that it’s the hairstyle that is the secret behind his success.

“It’s the team that makes me better,” he said. (SOURCE)
