SAFFC needed a rebound from a penalty in the dying minutes to seal the win against Hougang United and progress to the semi-final

The intention was evident from the starting eleven for both SAFFC and Hougang United as several senior players made their return to the respective squads.

Hougang were forced to make do without Stanislav Vidakovic as he is set to miss the rest of the season after he underwent an operation two days ago due to a ligament injury.

Hougang will start off their knockout stages, and a possible dream run to League Cup glory, when they travel to the Choa Chu Kang Stadium to face the recently resurgent Singapore Armed Forces FC this coming Saturday.

Right after the three week break in June, Hougang had turned into a more exciting outfit, by going on a six-game unbeaten streak. However, that was ended by Home United last Wednesday, after a second-string line up went down 2-0 against the Protectors.

Super-sub Indra fires Home to victory

Indra Sahdan came on in the second half to strike twice for Home United as they beat Hougang United 2-0 in their Starhub League Cup Group C match, scoring only his second and third goals for the club since re-signing for them this season.

Home fielded a strong line-up but could still afford to leave the likes of Indra and Qiu Li on the bench, while the Croatian duo of Ante Barac and Stanislav Vidakovic were left out of the Hougang squad entirely, who had five Prime League players named amongst the substitutes.

Twelve minutes into the game, Franklin Anzite found Shotaro Ihata with a lovely ball over the top, but Syaqir Sulaiman recovered well to put in an excellent covering tackle just as the Japanese striker was about to pull the trigger.

The Home forward got underneath the ball and headed it well over five minutes later, as he rose to meet a freekick from Masrezwan Masturi from the right.

Hougang responded with Jordan Webb bamboozling Masrezwan down the left with some neat footwork, before floating in a cross which crashed off the far post with Lionel Lewis looking on helplessly.

Hougang will continue their quest of glory when they take on the Protectors – for the second time in eleven days at Hougang Stadium.

The Cheetahs had already qualified for the knockout stages, after defeating Courts Young Lions on Sunday and subsequently sending them into the newly formed plate competition.

Nenad’s charges’ morale is on sky high, with players hitting on top form together on the right moment. Apart from a disappointing defeat against Gombak in the Singapore Cup, the Cheetahs’ current form is on six victories and a draw in their last eight matches, and currently enjoying their best form run in their history.

After suffering a defeat against Home United in their group C opener, only a victory could ensure progress to the quarter-finals for Court Young Lions.

But it was not to be their night as the visitors took all three points courtesy of a goal each from Mamadou Diallo and Azhar Sairudin.

The Cubs had a disastrous start in their final group game against Hougang United at the Jalan Besar stadium, giving away an unnecessary freekick in the sixth minute of the game allowing the Cheetahs to grap the opener.

Ante Barac sent in a harmless ball to the penalty box and Syazwan Buhari completely misjudged the flight of the cross. Diallo took full advantage of the situation as he headed it into the net to give his team the lead.

Hougang United will kick off their StarHub League Cup 2012 campaign with a visit to Jalan Besar Stadium on Sunday evening to take on an unpredictable Courts Young Lions outfit.

2011 was a milestone year for the northeastern club, not only finishing a record seventh in the league, but also achieving a semifinals finish for the RHB Singapore Cup and finding themselves just a penalty kick away from getting their hands on the League Cup title.

StarHub League Cup Draw

By www.hgfc.com.sg

Hougang have been drawn into Group C, alongside Courts Young Lions and closest rivals Home United, in the Starhub League Cup slated to start on July 26.

Hougang will first play their fixtures away at Jalan Besar Stadium to face the Courts Young Lions on July 29th, before coming back to Hougang to face Home United on August 1st.

This years’ competition will also see a new format. Previously an all-round knockout competition, the top two teams from the group will qualify for the quarter finals, whilst the bottom teams from the four groups will contest in a plate competition, consisting of two semifinals and a final.

The Cheetahs will be looking forward to continue the dream run of last season, where they were the runners up of the competition, beating the likes of Woodlands, SAF FC and Home United along the way, before losing to defending champions Albirex Niigata in the finals.

Will the Cheetahs enjoy another cup dream run and win their first major silverware against all odds?? Come down and support the ONLY team from the Northeast!!

Come on Hougang! NO Surrender! (SOURCE)

League Cup: Triumphant Albirex celebrate rite of passage

Albirex Niigata (Singapore) were crowned champions of the League Cup 2011 tournament after beating Hougang United in the grand final at Jalan Besar Stadium on Saturday evening.

Yoshito Matsushita’s save to deny Jordan Webb in the final regulation attempt of the penalty shootout was enough to clinch the Japanese side victory by a 5-4 margin, after 120 minutes of football had left both sides exactly where they had started.

Despite the lack of goals, Albirex impressed on the occasion with a team display that was markedly different from what they had often shown this season, reflecting a newfound maturity against a firmly aggressive Hougang outfit.

Veteran campaigner Mohd Noor Ali showed that he had not lost his finalist’s touch when he fired Hougang United to an upset victory over Home United on Tuesday evening in the League Cup 2011 semifinals.

The 36-year-old, who had played in cup finals for Geylang United, SAFFC and Woodlands Wellington, kept up his streak by scoring the only goal of the game to stun heavy favourites Home 1-0 at their home turf of Bishan Stadium in front of a near-capacity crowd.

SAFFC will have to wait for yet another year to lay their hands on the League Cup, after they were sent crashing out of the competition on Friday evening by Hougang United, who came back from a goal behind to seal progress into the semifinals.
Indra Sahdan Daud scored late in the first half to delight the Warriors fans gathered at Choa Chu Kang Stadium, only for Jordan Webb to cancel his strike out on 53 minutes.

League Cup: Cheetahs claim revenge to enter quarters

WWFC 0 - 2 HGFC

A brazen and convincing Hougang United side showed up at Woodlands Stadium on Tuesday evening to defeat hosts Woodlands Wellington 2-0 and claim a place in the League Cup quarterfinals.

It was swift revenge for the ferocious Cheetahs, who just four days earlier had fallen 2-3 to the same opponents in a surprise result at Jalan Besar Stadium when the two sides had met in the S.League.

Moon Soon Ho was the star on that occasion, but on his own turf he had a far quieter game as Hougang got the redress they might have felt they deserved.
