No revenge for Cup exit for Hougang

A stalemate at the Hougang Stadium meant that the Cheetahs missed their chance to exact revenge for their RHB Singapore Cup quarter-final exit to Gombak United.

It was the perfect opportunity for Hougang United to get something over their Cup nemesis, Gombak United when the two teams faced off at Hougang Stadium on Sunday night.

However, the absence of playmaker Ante Barac, coupled with playing out the last 33 minutes with 10 men, proved just a little too much for them in what ended as a stalemate.

Match Preview: Hougang United vs Gombak United

Gombak travel to the Hougang Stadium tonight to take on Hougang as they continue their climb up the table. Currently in ninth place, a win here for the Bulls will see them leapfrog Hougang into eighth place as both teams are level on points before tonight’s clash.

A win for Hougang though, will put them just one point away from 7th-placed SAFFC who are set for their worst-ever finish this season. The Cheetahs were made to rue two dropped points in their last game, allowing Woodlands Wellington to equalise twice after they had twice taken the lead.

Bacina: Cup exit was fully deserving

Hougang United coach Nenad Bacina believes their RHB Singapore Cup quarter-final exit at the hands of Gombak United was the right result.

The Cheetahs headed into Saturday evening's game at the Hougang Stadium holding a one-goal lead from the first leg, but were beaten 2-0 by the dominant visitors thanks to goals from Julien Durand and Hafiz Rahim.

And Bacina, who has long scoffed as suggestions of luck playing a part in football, believes the only reason why his side were knocked out is because they failed to deliver on the night.

Hougang will be looking forward this quarter final tie off, when they face the Bulls again this Saturday, which promises to be an exciting affair.

Goals from Jordan Webb and a rare goal from Ante Barac had the Cheetahs one foot into the semi-finals, where they will meet the winning team of the uniformed derby of Home United and the Singapore Armed Forces.

However, Hougang needed to step up the performance to protect the slender lead, especially in the first half, where they had struggled to put through passes. Another main problem is the Bulls towering attackers, which they had conceded through an early goal from Julien Durand.

Bulls falter against Hougang United

An early goal from Julien Durand was not enough for Gombak United as they fell to a 1-2 home defeat against visitors Hougang United in the first leg of the RHB Singapore Cup Quarter Final last night.

In the absence of head coach K Balagumaran who is currently away for his AFC Pro License coaching course, assistant Stephen Ng took his place in the dugout. Other than Balagumaran, Gombak were also missing both Fareez Farhan and Samuel Benjamin to Under-22 call-ups.

For Hougang’s Nenad Bacina, he had almost a full squad to choose from but had to contend with the absence of Prime League duo Farhan Rahmat and Ignatius Ang who joined both Fareez and Samuel in the Singapore Under-22 squad currently in Indonesia for the AFC U22 qualifiers.

Hougang United will face the Bulls of Gombak United on Tuesday in a RHB Singapore Cup Quarter final fixture, which will be a two-legged fixture.

Hougang, who had a fairytale run last season, in which they had finished fourth last season in the cup, only to be denied by both foreign teams, Albirex Niigata & Etoile FC.

The Cheetahs will be looking to spark another glory run in the cup, and with Lau Meng Meng and his charges managed to dispatch Tanjong Pagar United through penalties in the preliminary round, they are looking to settle the tie against the Bulls.

The Cheetahs fell to their third defeat this season, this time to a resolute Gombak United defence and also their fast counter attacks, which proved to be fatal.

The Cheetahs were missing the presence of Stanislav Vidakovic, who was suspended after collecting five yellow cards this season. Azhar Sairudin also missed out, still serving his three match ban after being sent off during the Tampines game.

Bulls charge to first home win of the season

In an even game played at the Jurong West Stadium, it was Gombak United who emerged victorious as they came away with a narrow 2-1 victory against Hougang United. It was Gombak's first home victory of the season, after they were held to a frustrating goalless draw late last month before going down to Brunei DPMM who came visiting last Saturday.

Missing the presence of the towering Stanislav Vidakovic in the heart of defence, Hougang fell to an early goal in the 8th minute. A deep cross from Nurullah Hussein was knocked into the path of an unmarked Jung in the six yard box. He was left with the simplest of tasks of slotting the ball into the bottom corner past Hougang’s Fadhil Salim for his first goal of the season.

The Bulls pair each grabbed a goal to record a vital win for the hosts, while the Cheetahs played with 10-men for the last part of the game as Syaqir Sulaiman was sent off.

In a battle of the mid-table teams of last season, Gombak United beat 10-men Hougang United 2-1 at the Jurong West stadium to record their first home win of the season in front of 861 spectators.

Jung Hee Bong and Hafiz Rahim were majestic as they created the goals for each other over two halfs, while Mamadou Diallo's equalizer before half-time proved to be a mere consolation for the visitors, who had Syaqir Sulaiman sent off before the game ended after amassing two yellow cards.

The Cheetahs will be looking to increase their chances on improving last season's 7th place finish - their best yet in history, when they take on the Bulls at Jurong West Stadium this Sunday.

Hougang United went back on track to winning ways after impressively dispatching Woodlands Wellington at the Ram's Den, with a Jordan's screamer, penalty, and Stanko Vidakovic's deflected effort to win 3-1, and brought Hougang back to the top half of the table.

GBFC 3 - 1 HGFC

This is the gutsiest performance I’ve seen at my time here. The boys battled hard for the result and played beyond themselves!”

Those were the words for Darren Stewart, Gombak United’s head coach of three years, after they survived a second-half onslaught by Hougang United to ultimately emerge 3-1 victors at Jurong West Stadium on Thursday evening to leapfrog their opponents into sixth place.

Hougang United      vs      Gombak United
Hougang United gear up to host visitors Gombak United this Thursday at the Hougang stadium. Aide's  black army replenishes itself with extra muscle up front in the form of Brazilian striker Vitor Borges, who has since joined Hougang United after a 6 month stint at Balestier Khalsa.

His recruitment comes during this pivotal moment where the injury duck has hit the Cheetahs for about a month or so, leaving the fire power upfront severely wanting. And a big & strong fella like Vitor Borges is just what Hougang United needs. He will be a welcomed inclusion.

"What's your beef with Gombak?"

Hougang United's performance on that night when they hosted Balestier Khalsa can be summed up in the words of avid Cheetahs supporter Ian Su Genping as, "Bitter sweet..."

Fast forward to Tuesday, Gombak United FC have only lost twice this season, and are currently 6th in the S-league. Their latest defeat, a 1-0 to SAFFC. Gombak were on a triple winning streak only to see their run cut off by the Warriors, and will be looking to re-establish that favourable form.

While Hougang United who are not too far behind at 8th, will be given another daunting task of the taking the bull by it's horns.
